Training camp goes up a notch for the Raiders on Wednesday , but the team’s biggest free-agency arrival won’t be there for it.As noted by Michael Gehlken of the , receiver Antonio Brown remains absent as the Raiders welcome the Rams for two days of joint practice. It will be the eighth practice that Brown has missed, due to feet that were frozen by entering a cryotherapy chamber without proper footwear.“It’s good to go against a different scheme,” quarterback Derek Carr said regarding the joint practices, via Gehlken. “I really enjoy it and especially when it’s two really professional teams that aren’t trying to prove their manhood or prove their toughness to each other. Obviously, football is a physical game, but when there are just fights and brawls, I think that’s pointless.”Five years ago, during Carr’s rookie season, the Raiders and Cowboys got into a knock-down-drag-out fight during training camp at Oxnard, California. The following year, the Rams and Cowboys rumbled in Oxnard. Raiders coach Jon Gruden and Rams coach Sean McVay, who worked together in Tampa and who remain good friends , surely will try to avoid any joint-practice ugliness. The Raiders and Rams will meet in a preseason game on Saturday night in Oakland. Brown surely won’t be playing. Although his condition has been downplayed by the Raiders, it’s clear that it’s not minor. At some point, the Raiders need to start worrying about whether he’ll be available for Week One — and if so whether he’ll be effective. There was a time this offseason when Nevin Lawson was considered the next man up at cornerback after the Raiders three starters. That ended when the offseason addition was handed a 4-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. That suspension is now over, allowing him to return to the team if they still want him.Currently the Raiders’ cornerbacks are Gareon Conley, Daryl Worley, Lamarcus Joyner, Trayvon Mullen, and Keisean Nixon.Lawson was a former starter for the Lions who was signed as a free agent this offseason. He has never had an interception in his career and with the way he played in preseason for the Raiders it become pretty evident why.His preseason performances showed he doesn’t deserve a roster spot ahead of Mullen or Nixon. But he may not need to replace one of them at this moment because the announcement that Vontaze Burfict has been suspended opens up a roster spot. That makes the most sense for the time being because the Raiders are currently in another country and they already added two linebackers this week, signing Dakota Allen off the Rams practice squad and calling up Justin Phillips from their own practice squad. Phillips was active last week while Dakota Allen was inactive. They could activate both and the linebacking corps would be Tahir Whitehead, Nicholas Morrow, Kyle Wilber, Phillips and Allen. Then they could take the bye week to consider bringing in another linebacker while also considering whether Lawson is worth a roster spot.Follow @LeviDamien
